My wife and I had our kitchen remodeled by Lawrence and Distinctive Kitchen Designs. Lawrence was a pleasure to work with and a wealth of knowledge. We had multiple bids for the job, but after meeting with everyone we felt a sincereness to Lawrence that was unmatched. Our kitchen project was a complete makeover which transformed our 1988 kitchen into what we call a modern rustic 2022 model. We removed walls, moved appliances, added a huge center island and more. Lawrence was at our house almost everyday that work was being done. He was responsive to our calls or texts when there was an issue or question. As we ran into a thing here and there, Lawrence was quick to come up with solutions that worked and didn't add additional costs to the project. Even now, after our project has been completed, Lawrence is responsive to questions we may have about our new kitchen and has even come back to further explain things. This was the third time I've hired Lawrence. Three very different kitchens/bathrooms/fireplaces and they all are gorgeous and so functional. Lawrence is wonderful to work with - quality and solution-oriented, excellent tradesmen that love him, good at scheduling, calm and a very nice person. I love my newest kitchen. It's not particularly large but Lawrence added a ton of storage and it is beautiful! Everyone loves the glass door cabinets. When a cabinet arrived damaged, Lawrence was able to repair it himself and kept everything on track. The fireplace and bathrooms he redesigned are amazing too. He is the complete package! We engaged Lawrence Lambert / Distinctive Kitchen Designs in the fall of 2023 to do a complete rebuild of our obsolete and cramped kitchen, incorporating the adjacent underused dining room. It was the best thing we did for ourselves in a long time.
Lawrence calls himself a “project manager” rather than a “general contractor,” though he is really both. After a consultation to gather our wish list, he crafted a design (in CAD) to review with us. After fine-tuning that, the process was underway. We had chosen some unconventional appliances (like a retro-style fridge with a large door); he made sure the plans would accommodate them and provide adequate clearances.
Lawrence has a background in cabinetry making. The cabinetry is first class: heavy-duty wood, furniture-like joinery, and hinges/sliders that provide adjustable soft close for doors, drawers, and slide-outs. The cabinets are custom-made in Indiana. His provider for the quartz countertops is local (Schaumburg), and we were able to choose from a large variety of raw slabs; the countertops were cut and installed within a week of measurement.
We had a steady stream of subcontractors, whom Lawrence orchestrated: demolition of the old kitchen and wall, electricians for lighting and power, and craftsmen to finish the floor, provide plumbing, patch drywall, install the cabinetry and trim, install wall tile and paint. Again, first-class across the board: excellent work and a minimum of waiting time.
A gut-rebuild kitchen project like this is not inexpensive. Lawrence provided the schedule of costs and payments up front, each payment corresponding to a milestone in the project, and a clear statement of what we were expected to provide ourselves (like sink, faucet, appliances, and tile when we opted to add tile). There were no surprises.
Communication was excellent (mostly texts, some emails) and always responsive. He was available on the weekend when we were shopping for a sink and faucet, to verify that what we had chosen would conform to the plans.
We had been given an estimate of 8 weeks for the project, and that was almost exactly on target, even though the work straddled the year-end holidays.
